El árbol del Universo es un sí­mbolo asociado al de la Montaña del Universo, sobre cuya cima crece. Se trata de un árbol situado en el centro de la Tierra; sus raíces descienden hasta lo más profundo del mundo inferior, y sus ramas se extienden hasta abarcar el Este y el Oeste, llegando las más elevadas hasta el cielo má¡s alto. Al profeta Mahoma (saws) le incumben las raí­ces de este árbol, así­ como sus ramas y el árbol de la Vida, que está en el centro del Universo y que se ilumina por su propia actividad, en palabras de Arthur Jeffery este libro es la especial contribución de Ibn al-Arabi a la doctrina de la Persona de Mahoma (saws). Su propósito expreso es ilustrar la unicidad de Mahoma (saws) en su relación con Dios, con la humanidad y con el Cosmos.
