My body is made of scars,
some were done to me,
but most I did to myself.

Keera is a killer. As the King's Blade, she is the most talented spy in the kingdom. And the king's favored assassin. When a mysterious figure moves against the Crown, Keera is called upon to hunt down the so-called Shadow. She tracks her target into the magical lands of the Fae, but Faeland is not what it seems . . . and neither is the Shadow. Keera is shocked by what she learns, and can't help but wonder who her enemy truly is: the King that destroyed her people or the Shadow that threatens the peace?

As she searches for answers, Keera is haunted by a promise she made long ago, one that will test her in every way. To keep her word, Keera must not only save herself, but an entire kingdom.

Fans of fast-paced high fantasy such as A Court of Thorns and Roses series, The Inadequate Heir, and From Blood and Ash author Jennifer L. Armentrout, will enjoy the fierce female characters, sapphic representation, and fantasy romance of A Broken Blade.… (more)

Should have been good, but just wasn't feeling the characters. ( )

This book caught me by surprise. I was interested in it, but I didn't know how good it would be until I read it. It was full of intrigue, secrets, and surprises with meeting Keera and learning about her and her life and career as the Blade and then meeting and learning some about the Princes and other characters and then at the end of this book was a huge surprise and twist. It was a cliffhanger ending, for sure.
Do pay attention to any content and trigger warnings. This is very much an adult fantasy series with a lot of alcohol/drugs, sexual content on the page, scars/self-harm, violence, depression, and grief. Thanks so much to Edelweiss and Union Square and Co. for letting me read and review this story. All thoughts and opinions are my own. ( )

"Only if you leave a crown to claim"

This was a good fantasy novel that was easy to get lost in. I easily forgot that I was reading and became completely immersed in the story. I would say this is upper YA or lower NA. I really enjoyed the plot and the character development was wonderful. I think some of the world building could use some work but it was still good. I enjoyed how mysterious the characters were. The ending had a twist and a cliffhanger.
One of my favorite parts about the book was getting to see the constant struggle from the MFC as she battled with alcoholism. It felt realistic.
For those that are wondering, there is not much romance. Maybe the last 20% has some. There is a passionate kissing scene and one with some descriptive touching.

Tropes:
Enemies to lovers
One bed
Forced proxmity ( )

A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair
The Halfling Saga series, book 1. Fantasy. Cliffhanger.
Keera is the Kingā€™s Blade. An assassin. Itā€™s her job to protect the kingdom and act as spy. She needs to know the differences between the mortals, an elf or halflings, like herself. Keera is now on the hunt to kill the Shadow, by order of the King. Her personal agenda is actually deeper. She wants, no, needs, to save the kingdom.

Keera is deeply troubled by the killings sheā€™s been forced to do over the years. She doesnā€™t want to hurt anyone. She has a softness in her heart for her attendant. That tells us sheā€™s not as cold as she wants everyone else to believe. Even a bit naive to me in some respects.
It reads a bit YA to me but we do find out she is quite a bit older. With the killings and tortur pe and blood, this is definitely an adult read.
Twists and surprises and cliffhanger ending.

Iā€™m looking forward to reading more. ( )

Keera is a killer. As the Kingā€™s Blade, she is the most talented spy in the kingdom. And the Kingā€™s favored assassin. When a mysterious figure called the Shadow starts making moves against the Crown, Keera is forced to hunt the masked menace down.

She crosses into the magical lands of the Fae, trying to discern if her enemy is Mortal, Elf, or a Halfling like her. But the Faeland is not what it seems, and neither is the Shadow. Keera is shocked by what she discovers and canā€™t help but wonder who her enemy truly isā€¦

The King that destroyed her people? The Prince that tortures them? Or the Shadow that threatens her place at court?

As she searches for answers, Keera is haunted by a promise she made long ago. A promise not only to save herself but an entire kingdom.
