I knew when I read the summary that "The Wedding Dress Circle" would be a delightfully heartwarming and feel-good book. I was not wrong. If you're not in the mood for any depressing historical fiction, you can definitely count on this book. That in itself is a gem. The three main characters were all distinct and interesting. My main complaint is that the main moment of development for each character happens off stage. There is a lot of telling throughout the book and it doesn't do the work to develop those moments or relationships. I wondered while I was reading if this bothered me and the answer is yes and no. It bothers me because I was taught to expect more, but it also didn't because the book is what it is. It delivers on being cute and exactly what you expect from it based on the summary. It's a Hallmark-level historical fiction, but I think there's value in that and I'm interested in reading some of the authors other books.

The story is told through alternating POV of Grace Carlisle, Cressida Westcott, and Violet Westcott. This historical fiction is based on true events during war time Britain. Cressida Westcott is a famous fashion designer who lost her business after the London Blitz. She returns to the family home hoping to be welcomed after leaving years ago to live her dream in London. She finds the family home in the hands of her niece, Violet Westcott and nephew, Hugh Westcott. The reality of life during WWII sets in as even the most affluent feel the effects. Grace Carlisle is the daughter of the local vicar who is hoping to repair her mother's wedding dress. During this era, many women were scaping together clothes or borrowing wedding dresses as supplies are hard to find. Cressida finds her place by gathering women and teaching them how to sew. it becomes their contribution to the war effort in a unique and meaningful way.

I received a complimentary ARC of this novel from NetGalley and Random House Publishing. My review of this book is voluntary and all unbiased opinions are my own. ( )

Oh, Ms. Ryan, you have done it again. I don't sew, and I am not that interested in needlework, so I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this, but yes, I did. It is a romance through and through but with such an abundance of historic detail and nuance, it goes far beyond the usual trope.

Such a lovely writer, carrying the stories along and intertwining them in solid ways. Not a lot of surprises here, but never dull either. I am left with only one burning question:
How long before your next creation? :) ( )

The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle by Jennifer Ryan is a compelling triple love story set in a village outside London during World War II. The characters kept me engaged, wondering how they were going to react to each situation. History lovers and love story readers alike will appreciate this courageous trio of women and their journeys.
