"Five years ago, Cass barely survived a brutal attack that left her family dead. Now a scuba diving instructor in Thailand, she has spent years trying to build a new, anonymous life for herself as one of the Permanents, a group of expats who have claimed the beautiful Thailand destination as their own. The permanents are charming, they're close-knit, and they don't linger on who they were before the island--they're the perfect group for Cass to finally shed her old self. But her dark past is about to catch up with her when Lucy, one of Cass' dive students, turns up dead and she starts getting messages from someone who has discovered who she really is. And that person will stop at nothing until Cass' truth is out and justice has been served"--… (more)

A group of unlikeable people, hiding out, running, seeking an escape from their nightmares. They find it on an island in Thailand. It should be an idyllic place but it is populated by The Permanents who are psychopaths. They claim to love and then lie and plot and plan and lie again without remorse. It was a story that left me without sympathy, disbelieving all of them. Connivers one and all. They lie to each other, to themselves. They are bad actors. Was there anyone worth saving? Did I care about any of them? Not really.

Because I could see who and what the players were and what they were about, nothing surprised me. The twists and turns were expected, people were going to die for absolutely no reason other than psychopaths rarely change. So let’s kill her and then someone is asking questions so she has to be killed and it just doesn’t stop. And let’s not forget the rotten, corrupt cops who can’t be trusted not to beat their suspects. There was nothing appealing about this story for me.

Thank you @netgalley for this ARC.

There is a fictional party island call Koh Sang in Thailand. It is that place you go to get from all and start anew. This is what Cass has done. She moved to this island to forget her past. She fell in love with a fellow “permanent” named Logan and found a family with the other workers at the resort.

Instagram Influencer and Blogger Brooke arrives on the island. Just before Brooke arrived a woman accidentally fell to her death. After being on the island a few weeks and getting to know all the permanents another body of a tourist is found in the ocean when Cass is out with her scuba diving students.

Cass and Brooke start to investigate these two deaths. The two of them start to get cryptic messages warning them to about their investigation. They do not let these warnings distract them and when a few more deaths occur, they start to get scared. There are so many secrets that the permanent a keeping, it occurs to them that one of them could be the killer. Both Cass and Brooke have secret motives about looking into these killings. Will they turn on each other and will they find the killer before another person is killed?

This books starts out slow and a bit confusion with the introduction of so many characters. The book is written from each of Cass and Brooke’s perspectives which does take a little getting use to. I will tell you to hang in there because the story will get going. Once it does you will not want to put it down. The twist and turns just keeps coming as the story unfolds. I actually thought I had figured out who the killer was but I was way off. The ending of this book was a big surprise that I did not see coming.

Mystery thriller set in Thailand fails to deliver.

A group of permanent residents on the island of Koh Sang, nestled in the Gulf of Thailand, have become like family over the years. Although they have all run from something in their pasts, they now work and live in this resort community and take care of each other. The recent death of a guest has upset the group dynamics, but the permanents have not seen the worst of it yet. A minor influencer, Brooke, arrives on the island ostensibly to promote tourism to this idyllic but relatively unknown SCUBA paradise, but soon it becomes obvious to all that she has an agenda.

This started out well but quickly deteriorated into lots of melodrama and took forever to get to the point. The motives behind the behaviors of all the characters seemed to ring false and the extent of their reactions was quite overdone. I didn't like any of the characters with all their secrets and lies. Their personal traumas and the reasons for each coming to Koh Sang were revealed much too late. It drug on and the detail I wanted to know was so slowly revealed that I was over it all by the time I got the answers. A last-ditch attempt at a final, crazy twist pushed the conclusion into the incredible.

I both read the e-book ARC and listened to the audio recording of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. I am not recommending. ( )
