Review of Uncorrected Reader’s Proof

Sarah Harrington is delighted by the lovely graduation celebration at the Harbor Yacht Club for her twin sons, Simon and Ethan. Simon, graduating from Harvard, would be heading for Columbia Law School in the fall while Ethan, graduating from the University of Massachusetts, had a keen interest in music.

How could she possibly know that, before the night drew to a close, she and her husband Richard would both be gone . . . and that one of her beloved twin sons would be blamed for their deaths?

=========

The story opens ten years in the past, at the graduation party. The night the twins’ parents were murdered.

Moving to the present, television producer Laurie Moran and her “Under Suspicion” crew are investigating cold case. Simon believed Ethan had committed the crime while the police believed Ethan and Simon had conspired to kill their parents. Ethan maintained his innocence and the twins have been estranged since the night of the tragedy.

Although this book is eighth in the “Under Suspicion” series, there is sufficient backstory for the book to work well as a standalone. The expected characters are all in place, joined by the Harrington family and friends. With its well-developed, nuanced characters, strong sense of place, and complex, intriguing plot, readers will find much to appreciate in this captivating mystery.

As long-held secrets come to light, readers who enjoy mysteries and thrillers will find much to appreciate in this story that grabs readers from the outset and keeps the suspense building until the unexpected denouement.

Highly recommended.

I received a free copy of this book from Simon and Schuster and NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Mary Higgins Clark was one of my mother’s favorite authors. Even though both my mother and Clark have passed away, I still rush to read anything associated with the author’s name. I guess I do it to keep up the tradition. I have to admit, though, I do enjoy her mysteries, benign though they may be.

This is the eighth in the Under Suspicion series and I have read all of them. The series centers on Laurie Moran, producer of a true crime television show that tries to solve cold cases. She is surrounded by a cast of supportive characters both at work and at home.

Laurie is contacted by a young woman who would like the show’s help in solving the murder of her parents years ago. Her identical twin brothers were under suspicion for the deaths but not charged and the local police really never looked beyond those two suspects. Now estranged, the brothers agree to participate in the show out of love for their sister and perhaps in hopes of finding out which one of them is guilty. Of course, all is not as it seems and there are twists to the story that Laurie helps uncover.

This is a typical MHC book; light, quick, easy reading and I couldn’t put it down. It is perfect for curling up on a rainy day or saving for a beach vacation. The story is solid; some of the repeating characters are a bit “too perfect”, but what is so wrong with a little bit of saccharin right now?

Thanks to @NetGalley and @simonbooks #SimonBooks for the DRC. ( )
