I got this book because I was intrigued by the h being an artist and loved the idea of her making a sculpture of the man she wanted in secret. Wasn't so sure about the spy element of it, as it doesn't really interest me. But to my surprise, I couldn't put this book down. I just loved Jane and I appreciated how Ransom comes to learn what a complete ass he is. He doesn't grovel until the final pages but when he does it's very satisfying. The secondary characters and their relationships were wonderful and what makes this book work in the end. ( )

During her come-out, Jane sculpted a nude statue of Ransom, Lord Blackburn, and fell into disgrace. Now she's back to chaperone her niece and brave society once more, to Ransom's mixed dismay and glee.
It's a cute story, though the plot meanders a bit. Jane is naive and doesn't understand why Ransom was the butt of all the jokes since it was all her fault in the first place (there's a funny reason). Ransom has been to war since the last time they met, and he has a better understanding of his attraction to Jane, but first, he has to break up the French spy network.
Still, it's a cute story and an enjoyable read. ( )

Lady Wombat says:

Dodd often has great concepts/hooks, but I find her plotting to be rather silly and her character development all tell and no show. Though this book got positive reviews elsewhere, I didn't think it much better than any of the others of hers I've read. Guess I'm just not a fan of the "excuse any plot/character confusion, as long as it's funny" type of romance.

This is my favorite historical. I fell in love with Ransom almost immediately. The intrigue, mystery, and twist were well written.

I've replaced this book over 20 times (I just recently bought the ebook version for my iPad) and it never, ever gets old. ( )
