I loved everything about Peregrine Quinn and the Cosmic Realm. The glittering, embossed front cover, the action-packed fantasy adventure and the entire costastic cast of vibrant, brilliantly imagined characters.
When the portals connecting the Terran Realm to the Cosmic Realm suddenly shut down and Peregrine’s godfather Daedulus is kidnapped she joins forces with immortals Rowan Strong and Callimachus Thorn to rescue Daedulus, block thunderbolts and prevent Eris from rising.
Submarines, trains, secret doors and ancient tunnels hurl our heroine and probationary CSI agent Rowan from the dreaming spires of Oxford to the glasshouses of Kew Gardens, down into the depths of the Under Underground and up into Acropolis Arcades armed with enough costech gizmos and gadgets to shake a lightsaber at.
I loved the humour and zippy writing style. Everything about glittering golden boy, Captain Hansel Pine made me smirk and as a popstar pinup brought Harry Styles to mind!
Fun, quirky identifiers from star-spangled waistcoats to hand-knitted cardigans, fly-away plaits to magic bowler hats bring the characters to life and the portrait gallery along with the maps at the front of the book are a lovely touch. Zeus, Hera, Daedulus, Hekate and Discord, the dryads, nymphs and fauns all provide a great introduction to Greek mythology for inquisitive young minds while flora and fauna are covered with bad guy lizards, a duck with attitude and squeaking, sweet peppermint smelling Bernadette, Daedeulus’s favourite plant.
A fantastic read for adults and middle-graders alike and just the very first in a series! ( )
