Eine wundervolle Italienerin Anfang 40, Laura, der in dieser Geschichte nahezu alle Männer verfallen. Claudius' Vater, ein namhafter Pariser Kunsthistoriker. Lorenzo Vitelli, ein feinsinniger italienischer Bischof, zuständig für die Vatikanbibliothek, Mentor der drei Studenten. Richard Valence, Sonderbeauftragter der französischen Regierung - kultiviert, sehr gut aussehend, Sakko und geschlossener Hemdkragen selbst bei dieser römischen Hitze. Sein erklärter Gegenspieler, Inspektor Ruggieri, immer in Hemdsärmeln, Typ Columbo. Der Fall: Auf dem europäischen Kunstmarkt taucht aus obskurer Quelle eine unbekannte Michelangelo-Zeichnung auf. Wurde sie aus den Archiven des Vatikans gestohlen? Überstürzt reist Claudius' Vater nach Rom. Bei einer nächtlichen Gala vor dem Palazzo Farnese wird er kurz nach seiner Ankunft durch einen Becher Schierling umgebracht. Wer aber war in der Lage, diesen antiken Gifttrank zu bereiten?

"Addio" sul serio!

Ci son rimasta male. Dopo aver letto tutti i libri della Vargas (e con gran soddisfazione), questo mi ha proprio deluso. Sembrava una forzatura continua. L'introduzione alla storia e ai personaggi stenta a decollare; la presunta atmosfera "decadente" della capitale italiana fa sì che anche il romanzo ne risenta; una patina di polvere e stanchezza cala su tutto, quasi come se l'immobilismo che caratterizza il nostro paese si diffondesse come un morbo anche tra le pagine del libro. Rari momenti di luce non sono sufficienti a far pendere il piatto della bilancia verso la narrazione brillante e circostanziata cui mi ero abituata. Giunti appena alla metà della storia, sembra non ci sia più niente da dire e il passaggio attraverso pasticciati colpi di scena non serve a riaccendere l'interesse del lettore. Il confronto con gli altri romanzi è schiacciante e a sfavore di questa incomprensibile (e si spera unica) parentesi. Mi auguro di non piangere la perdita di una cara amica.

This is the first novel published in 1994 by Fred Vargas. A very popular and notorious mystery writer in the French world right now. I hadn't read any of her novels yet. At the height of the hype frenzy (2 years ago) we couldn't keep the books on the shelves. Now, things have quiet down a bit and I was able to get my hands on her first novel. This is a plot with lots and lots of red herrings and an ending that cheats a little. What's really good in this little mystery, chase, thriller set in Rome in mid summer? The characters. Three young men in their mid to late twenties all fascinated by the step mother of one of them. All three gave themselves nicknames. But not any nicknames. Roman Emperor names. So we have Claudius, Nero and Tiberius. All three mixed up in the death of Claudius' father murdered on the Farnese's plaza on a faithful Saturday night. Was it because he stumbled on to the ring of thieves that are smuggling precious drawings from the Vatican's library or is it something a little more personal. Interesting. The title refers to the words the gladiator said to the Emperor before they started to fight. Loosely translated : Those who are about to die salute you. ( )

Uno dei primi romanzi scritti dalla Vargas - e uno degli ultimi pubblicati da Einaudi.
I personaggi sono insopportabili e vivono in una loro dimensione in cui quello che fanno e dicono è tremendamente interessante e particolare (almeno così la Vargas vuol farci credere).
I verbi coniugati a sentimento ("Io sono stato morto") non aiutano il lettore a ritrovare la serenità.

Ultimo appunto sul titolo: in Italia amiamo lo stravolgimento di frasi sensate in titoli (di libri/film) senza apparente connessione con la trama, in questo caso l'operazione è quasi più convoluta: il titolo originale riprende la famosissima frase latina (Morituri te saluant), non potevano usare quella?

Secondo me, non è uno dei migliori libri di Fred Vargas. I personaggi sono antipatici e almeno uno dei colpi di scena è un po'telefonato. Va anche detto che la pubbilcazione francese risale a parecchi anni fa, quindi è ovvio lo stile dell'autrice sia migliorato molto negli ultimi libri (tipo Nei Boschi Sacri). ( )
