A família de J. M. G. Le Clézio já havia emigrado para as Ilhas Maurício há cem anos quando seu avô, voltando para casa após uma temporada na França, foi posto em quarentena em uma ilhota nas proximidades. Os dias de isolamento, dos passageiros deixados à própria doença, incompreensão e ódio, marcaram profundamente esse homem, que logo depois deixaria Maurício para sempre.
Em Quarentena, Le Clézio escreve uma história que poderia ter sido, falsas memórias de uma família que se parece muito com a sua, com seus personagens míticos e busca de origens. ( )
