Viking marauders in their longships burst through the defences of ninth-century Europe, striking terror into the hearts of peasants and rulers alike for two centuries. But the Vikings were more than just marine warriors and this atlas shows their development as traders and craftsmen, explorers, settlers and mercenaries. With over sixty full colour maps, it follows the tracks of the Viking merchants who travelled deep into Russia, of Viking mercenaries who served in the emperor's bodyguard at Constantinople, and Viking mariners who sailed beyond the edge of the known world to North America.… (more)

okay, i would have preferred more maps. and perhaps less emphasis on the sagas as history. still, the Vikings went everywhere, and this makes a start. ( )

Don't let the 'picture book' appearance of this little book keep you from buying it, even if you're a serious scholar. The maps are indispensable, and the chronology is laid out logically. One could design an entire semester syllabus based on the chronology in this little book. ( )

I like this format for the actual maps less well than I Liked the McEvedy series of atlases. But the book is informative and tries to more of a survey of the "Abortive Scandinavian" Civilization, (as Arnold Toynbee called it), than a record of that society's impact on the other civilizations of the period. A good introduction to the Vikings for a general reader. It's well illustrated with maps, drawings, and photos as well as being an inexpensive volume. ( )
