Training a student’s ear is crucial to his or her success as a musician. Many
students have little ear training while in middle or secondary school, hindering their
development as musicians. Collegiate aural training classes have demonstrated that the
ear can be developed—it merely takes practice and repetition. As a well-developed ear
becomes increasingly important, graduating a music student from high school without
some sort of ear training is unjustifiable. With better ear training skills taught at the
middle and high school level, music students will improve as listeners, musicians, and
teachers.
