Beginning with tiny butterfly eggs and ending with the character traits of a full-grown specimen, this book presents the facts of life for the delicate fliers in child friendly language. The text follows the metamorphosis of caterpillar to butterfly and uses bright photos to chronicle every step. Cartoony illustrations accompany the photographs, delivering quick trivia alongside the light-hearted drawings. A simple glossary and website conclude the book and direct the child in pursuit of more butterfly knowledge.

Butterflies are a perennial favorite with adults and children alike. They are a quick wink of beauty in the day. Seeing a butterfly fly generally lightens my day for a moment. This book focuses on the beauty and importance of the insect in all of its incarnations - even the creeping caterpillar is honored and hailed as important. A competent beginning reader story that should be attractive to early readers. ( )
