PRODUCER: Good afternoon. ladies. It may surprise you all but I've written a play, and this afternoon the members of your drama group have kindly offered to give it a reading for me, so that we can alter anything that doesn't seem quite right.

PRODUCER: The scene opens to reveal the Heroine's aged mother sitting outside her cottage door, peeling potatoes . .. (nothing happens – she raises her voice) .. . sitting outside her cottage door, peeling potatoes ... (calling) I say, Mrs ---, aren't you ready yet '?
MOTHER (entering in mob cap. shawl and spectacle, carrying a vegetable knife) I can't start yet, Mrs ---.
PRODUCER, Why not?
MOTHER. I haven't got a potato.
PRODUCER. Well, never mind. Just pretend the potato.
MOTHER. Oh, I couldn't do that! We must get everything just right. It says here "Sitting peeling potatoes". It seems a funny thing to do, to sit outside peeling potatoes, but [ must do what it says. I mean, I can't act at all if I don't feel the part.
