This in-depth biography follows the two musicians from their Queens childhood and early days as "Tom and Jerry," which produced the singles hit "Hey Schoolgirl." But their first album, Wednesday Morning 3 am, failed to ignite enthusiasm, and the two split up so Simon could go to England for a solo tour of one night stands at folk clubs. While he was there a disc jockey in Florida played one of the album's tracks, "The Sound of Silence," which produced an overwhelming response. Columbia Records decided on their own to lift it from the album and release it as a single in a remixed version, catapulting the duo from relative obscurity to the top of the charts and changing their lives. Then came such classics as "Homeward Bound," "The Boxer," and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." When Mike Nichols asked them to do the music for the film The Graduate they recorded "Mrs. Robinson," which won them the first of many Grammy Awards. Victoria Kingston follows the duo through their amicable breakup in 1970 and tracks the subsequent solo careers of each as they pursued their separate projects. No library descriptions found. |
