Fernando Pessoa is Portugal's most important contemporary poet. He wrote under several identities, which he called heteronyms: Albet Caeiro, Alvaro de Campos, Ricardo Reis, and Bernardo Soares. He wrote fine poetry under his own name as well, and each of his "voices" is completely different in subject, temperament, and style. This volume brings back into print the comprehensive collection of his work published by Ecco Press in 1986.… (more)

I like Pessoa's work a lot. My rating here is based on the particular edition depicted rather than other collections with similar titles.

I prefer the English translations of Pessoa's writing by Richard Zenith and Chris Daniels. Edwin Honig's translations, editing, and writing about Pessoa to be more workmanlike and far less poetic.

Unfortunately, Goodreads doesn't always make clear distinctions between and among various editions of collections of poems, short stories and essays by the same author, especially when these books are translated. ( )

Ah, this is what matters to me. I'd like to acquire the Book of Disquiet but it is hard to find in used bookstores around Oakland and Berkeley. Otherwise, I have his poems (which are written using the names,Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis and Alvaro de Campo) to settle in with. Alberto Caeiro's section reminds me of Song of Myself. Likely to reach my top shelf, five stars, two thumbs up, the recommended list for poor writers everywhere. ( )

Fernando Pessoa is the greatest portuguese language poet after Camoes. But beyond this, he is the greatest poet of the XX century. He took Walt Whitman beyond and did in poetry what Borges did in prose, he became so many that he turned to be nobody and thus everything. With a genius unlike anyother he created to himself several alternative identidies, with their own stories and styles when writing and this book have his a share of this genial poet. ( )
