A life-affirming free-verse novel for young adults, this is an honest and refreshing look at homelessness without the grunge. It is an uncomplicated love story which is certain to appeal to the wide audience this talented writer/performer has already attracted.

A beautifully written story by Steven Herrick in short 1 page chapters about Billy, Caitlin and Old Bill. A delight to read, sad at times but ultimately heart warming. Just read it, you'll love it too. ( )

Written in verse format and with only three characters, "The Simple Gift" was a touching read about family and friendship. Loved it. ( )

With a story that is based on poems and verses, the author has to be able to capture the interest of readers and tell a story in a matter of words. And Steven Herrick definitely did that. It's been awhile since I was able to read one of these novels mostly because I get distracted easily. But Billy definitely held my interest as he took me on his adventure. It was a touching story and imagines the life of a runaway. It also gives hope to those unfortunate souls that they can still be saved and find a place in the world. ( )
