Beginning with the familiar answer to the title question--”Let me count the ways”--How Do I Love You? explores love by comparing it beautiful processes of nature, such as “I love you as the nest loves the sturdy bough” and “as the cat loves a sunny sill.” This board book utilizes rhythm, rhyme, and playful expressions on the face of the small child and animals of its illustrations to expressive safety, security, and happiness. It ends with the reassuring declaration that “I love all that you will be / and everything you are,” putting unconditional love into words that, along with the illustration, may hold even the youngest child’s attention. The feelings of warmth it inspires would be perfect for a bedtime story for a very young child (or at any time of day). ( )

The book, "How Do I Love You?", explains to children how much they are loved. Examples are given on every page describing how our love for children compares to other things and their environment, such as loving them as a bird loves to sing a song.

I think this is a great book to help children understand what love is and the extent of love! It also helps children understand comparisons. This book may be helpful to children who have a hard time using words to explain their feelings.

To incorporate this book into the classroom, I would bring many of student's favorite objects into the classroom and have them make comparisons as to what it reminds them of. For instance, I would bring a pillow and have them tell me what a pillow reminds them of, or balloons and cake so we could make comparisons. ( )
