Beautiful prose but obscure in some places I felt. Nevertheless a chilling and evocative picture of the dark days of 1937/8 when the Japanese army occupied Nanking. Equally a heartfelt sketch of a woman reaching personal crossroads in a foreign country during a time of crisis ( )
