Merit, Chicago's newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene-and to spy for the vamps while she's at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan's offering some steamy one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission. Merit must accept the assignment even though she knows that she'll probably regret it. And she's not wrong. Someone is gunning for Gabriel Keene, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She'll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals-not least between her and a certain centuries-old green-eyed Master vampire.… (more)

1) I really wanted to remove a star because Ethan put on his Resting Jackass Attitude....but that's not fair as this was an enjoyable otherwise.

2) Pacing, time and continuity seems a but funky. ( )

Book 3 of the Chicagoland Vamps. You have got to love Merit. She is a very quite head strong, and a smart ass to boot, she does not take squad from no one and that includes her Master Ethan. she is really a very good female alpha. Even though, she is strong willed, she understands her responsibilities and actions, especially when she screws up.

I started reading the series as part of a reading challenge and to try out as many new-to-me authors. There are not many series/books/ authors i fell immediately in love with. Chloe Neill writes a very nice and a very mean Urban Fantasy. She is right up there with Ilona Andrews and Kim Harrison. I am glad she keeps the PNR to a minimum and the UF as the main component. I admit, that at first i was not sure if i liked a weahlty Armani wearing vamp, but i stand corrected. i can only recommend to try the series and it gets better as the series progresses. ( )

Where would we be in a Chicagoland Vampires book without Merritt in some awesome clothes having to navigate crazy vamp/shifter politics while completely uncertain what’s really going on between her and Ethan? This one was extra fun because things between Merritt and Ethan finally heat up, with them doing the deed and then immediately (of course) going into “oh but we can’t” land. Ah relationship drama. Between that, going out to bars, and trouble with the shifters, who could ask for more?

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.

I like this series but I do not love it. I have given it 4 stars but its really more of a 3.5 in my opinion. I have continued to read this story because I am just enough interested with the story to want ot know how it ends. Basically everything about this is just alright for me the characters are good not great, the story is fairly interesting and the writing is decent. It is in no way bad but it is not one of my favorites either. ( )

This book puts the shifters into play in Chicago. Ethan wants an alliance with them and the Alpha puts it to a vote with all the shifters in North America. They are voting to either come out like the vampires or retreat to Alaska to wait things out. To sweeten the deal Ethan offers Merit as a bodyguard to help with site security on the vote. But not everyone wants to side with the vampires and there are pack politics at play. This book picks up right after book two and all the action happens over just a few days. A fast paced fun light read. ( )
