Fantasy. Fiction. Literature. In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand-and control-a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal...and arouse. As she recovers under Brock's care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order's mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself-until a secret from Brock's past and Jenna's own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.… (more)

Synopsis:
After being attacked by the Ancient, Jenna Darrow finds herself struggling to understand the changes going on around and inside her. Not only must she come to terms with the changes occurring within her own body and with the existence of vampires in the world but also with her inexplicable attraction to Brock, a Breed warrior who has the power either to heal or destroy her heart forever…

Review:
The last two books in the series have been hit or miss for me (Ashes was a miss but Shades was an amazing hit). Unfortunately, Taken by Midnight is more miss than hit, although there are some highlights such as the continuing story of the battle against Dragos and the search for the missing Breedmates. I really enjoyed the fact that the women of the Order take an active role in the story and are not merely window dressing.

Another positive aspect is the information provided regarding Hunter, the cold and logical warrior who has fascinated me from book 5, and Chase who seems to be coping with some serious issues. I am eagerly awaiting their stories.

The romance is the most disappointing aspect of the book because, even though Jenna and Brock are interesting as individual characters, their relationship lacks the chemistry and intensity of connection that characterizes the other couples in the series. While you cannot help but sympathize with Jenna’s suffering, it is difficult to completely identify with someone who is completely immersed in their pain and guilt to the extent that they have almost lost the will to live. Brock, on the other hand, is an amazing hero, loving, patient and protective but his attraction to Jenna didn’t mesh with me.

Overall, the writing flows and the action scenes are excellent. However, many questions remain unanswered regarding Jenna’s transformation and I hope that details will be forthcoming in the next installments.

Absolutely AWESOME. Excellent writing. Sensational story.
This one had all the elements that I love perfectly blended. Constant action, mystery, suspense, adult romance, a bit of espionage, a lot of danger. Interesting new characters are brought into the mix and some new questions are brought up. For instance, what is going on with Chase?!
I loved the main characters Jenna & Brock. The mystery surrounding what the Ancient did to her and how it is changing her. Jenna & Brock's interactions are off the charts hot and filled with a mystery of their on, on top of the intrigues going on with the Dragos situation.
All the Order's warriors and all their Breedmates are fully involved in this one. While they may not win every battle, they are determined to win the war with Dragos.
Gripping and riveting and completely enthralling! ( )

I really enjoyed this one. though I'm quite curious on what's happening to jema? will we see more of what she is turning into in future books? I really hope so. ( )

Listened to audio narrated by Hillary Huber. Jenna has been changed by one of the original aliens, after he attacked and almost killed her. The Order has taken her back to their compound, monitoring and caring for her and the changes she's undergoing. Jenna is a former police officer who lost her husband and child to an accident, her guilt deeply affects her but Brock helps her find healing and a new place with the Order. She in turn helps Brock heal from his own guilt at losing a breedmate under his protection years ago. Interesting new information comes to light as well as a few surprises towards the end.

"We're in Boston, at a private facility. It was the safest place for you to be now. The safest place for all of us."

Read for my Set in New England Halloween bingo square.
Way more of a paranormal fiction story than romance, this couple had no building relationship at all. This book felt like series filler, not a lot of advancement in Dragos vs The Order. I wanted Hunter and Mira to get together (Mira could age super fast or something) but I see Hunter is the hero of the next book with a different heroine. Boo. ( )
