"Uderzo: Carnet de croquis" describes the creation of an Asterix album. It offers an insigth into how a graphic novel is produced, and the work that goes into making an Asterix album. Worth reading if you are interested in graphic novels in general and Asterix in particular, but somewhat superficial, I wouldn't have paid for it if it hadn't been a part of this omnibus.
"Asterix chez Rahazade" is a true Asterix album, with a sweet story, lots of puns and humorous notes. Is is not the classic quality of "Asteris and Cleopatra", but it is a well told story with great images. It takes Asterix, Obelix and the bard Troubadurix on an exotic trip to India. Troubadurix singing is so bad that it makes the skies weep, and a passing fakir sees this as the salvtion of his country which is suffering from severe drought. Troubadorix sees this as a chance to meet his adoring audience, and Asterix and Obelix accompany him on the travel. Their adventures include flying carpets, evil viziers (A nod to Goscinny's Iznogoud series), beautiful princesses in distress and rampaging elephants. There is nothing new in the story, but the usual ingredients are served up with flair and humour.
"Comment Obélix est tombé dans la marmite du druide quand il était petit" is the story of how Obelix fell in the magical potion pot as a child, a story by Goscinny from 1965 with new illustrations by Uderzo. The story is too weak to merit a full album, as it was published in 1986, but it has it's place in a complete Asterix collection. The water colour illustrfations show other nuances of Uderzo's talents than the graphic of the true Asterix albums, and the illustrations are beautiful. ( )
