Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson 1987

The Folio Society has published Stevenson’s famous Scottish novel twice – in 1987 (reviewed below), and as a completely new edition in 2006.

Kidnapped is historical fiction and an adventure novel that was initially written as a boys' book in 1886, but it is also more than just an exciting teenager’s book; it’s a thoughtful novel about politics and dissent, rich in moral complexity. It is also beautifully written, with the occasional Scots word (explained in a glossary at the back of the book) or phrase contributing to its peaty flavour.

The 222 page Folio Society edition is introduced by Frank Delaney and has multiple integrated line drawings and a two-page spread by Annie Newnham. The page tops and endpapers are pale blue, and it is bound in dark blue cloth blocked in black with a wrap-around drawing. The spine title runs from bottom to top and the mid-blue slipcase measures 23.5x16.5cm.

Thanks Warwick. It's perhaps also worth mentioning that the sequel, Catriona, was published by Folio Society in series with this 1987 edition. They'd make a good pair to pick up together.

Yesterday I received a copy of the 2006 edition of Treasure Island. Didn't know that one had the same design as Kidnapped. Very nice both of them.
