I would only use this book if I was reading it to a student. There is a lot going on that would take away from the actual informational text on the page.

This book is all about crystals, what crystals are, how they're formed, and where to find them. Like the book about fossils, this is a super engaging book! Each page has its own heading/topic, with tons of fun information and facts. I learned stuff I didn't know before! There are hands-on activities for students to try included on some of the pages, which is super fun!

Summary: A very informative book about the life cycles of insects for younger children. The text is large and each new unusual word is explained and there are examples. The book has many real photographs of insects during their life cycles. It explains what insects are, what they eat, where they might lay their eggs, how they reproduce, what kind of cycles they go through, and many different vocabulary terms relating to the insect cycle.

Personal Reaction: I exceedingly enjoyed this graphic informative book. I even learned a bit myself! This book has many pictures, with great color and graphics illustrating the life cycles of numerous insects. I loved how each picture got a description as well. This book makes a insect hater, myself, actually like insects now. A great book to start a science chapter about insects and/or life cycles.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1) This activity would take a few weeks, but having a butterfly life cycle within the classroom would be an incredible extension idea to this book. After reading the book, it should be read around spring time, the teacher will gather all the materials needed to have a mini habitat for a caterpillar who changes into a butterfly (the butterfly will be let go after this project). A butterfly kit can be purchased online. Students should keep a journal and write each day what they observe in the butterfly observation tank. As the egg changes into a larva then to a pupa and then finally into a butterfly, allow students to discuss during and after what they think will happen (what will come after the larva stage, etc) The teacher can have questions for the students to help with the observation journal. Let the butterfly go.
2) After reading this book, take the students out onto the playground, or have a mini field trip to a butterfly/insect garden. Hand out a worksheet prior to arrival of things they might find. Have students draw and write what they observe and find throughout the playground or other garden. Make note - Prior to going outside to observe insects, tell students to importance of not disturbing the insects, IE: humans can harm them on accident, disruption, use examples, such as “you wouldn’t want some giant insect coming into your home and trying to pet you” hahahah.

This book is great for teaching children about the sense of touch. It has many science words and definitions, also many pictures that explain why we have the sense of touch.

I do like the book, especially as an informative book for children. The book is laid out in chapters that are easy to follow. Key words like "guidance" or "tolerant" are bolded for the reader. The book also has captioned pictures, and little did you know sections to spark reader interest. It is all nonfiction, facts about the Muslim holiday Ramadan. The language is easy to follow, and the pictures bright and colorful. It is a great tool for teaching diversity.

This book was an excellent introduction to the arctic and to the art of reading non fiction. Each section outlines important information about the arctic habitat and includes photos, headings, sub-headings. The book also features a table of contents, an index, and a glossary. The text is accessible for young readers and the pictures are interesting.

I liked the book, "Ramadan." I liked this book because it was informational. I learned a lot about Ramadan that I did not know before. For example, I did not know that Ramadan was an entire month, or that it was time to strengthen family and friend relationships. Furthermore, I liked how the book talked about things outside of Ramadan because I learned more about the Islamic culture. For instance, I learned about Sahoor, a meal eaten before sunrise, and iftar, a meal eaten after sunset. Lastly, the main idea of the story was Ramadan and the islamic culture.

A handsome book that teaches children about Ellis Island in a simple and frank manner. One of the many highlights of this book are the beautiful and informative pictures that accompany the text. I also appreciated that many nationalities, races and ethnic groups were discussed rather than focusing on just one. This book can help young children learn about immigration and find their own place in this complex and rich subject.

This is a great information book for young readers. The photographs are especially nice and very vivid, and the font is fun, and kid-friendly. There is a nice glossary and more information than I expected about the life cycle of a flower. The table of contents is really long, but does provide young readers with an easy way to access particular topics.

This book was a little too hard for even my higher readers in Kindergarten. It served as a good read aloud though to teach the concepts of plants/flower. My K boys loved the book, especially since they have been studying flowers and plants in their science class. They were able to connect easily and identify much of the information we read. This book is part of a life cycle series and I plan to look into more from this series.

“The Arctic Habitat” is a book that describes the way of life in the arctic. This book touches topics such as animals, weather, and plants. This book also describes how animals gain energy, stay warm, and how animals find food. Besides these topics, the book discusses how animals stay safe, build homes, and migrate or hibernate.

I believe that this is a good book to have for reference for students. It is a difficult read aloud book and not meant for students to sit down and read the whole thing at once. It has many scientific words in it that are difficult for even 5th graders to read, but it is good for them to look up information if you are doing a science unit of beetles or their life cycle.
