Gladys Barbieri

This book, A Charmed Life, was okay. I liked it but it wasn't one of my favorite. It had good meaning to it but some parts i found to be odd, or confusing for a younger child. Like when the mom would smile or acknowledge the young girls new charm bracelet, I think kids would be confused about it. The point of view was first person which i actually liked in the book. First person just seems to make the story more genuine. The plot was well organized throughout the book although i really don't think there was much suspense or conflict or a real big moment. Even though when the last gave her the bracelet was sort of a big moment the book did not do justice for the situation. I think the overall message of the story is that no matter wealthy or not wealthy we all want one thing and that is too have a good life for us and our children and that we aren't all that different.… (more)

The children are very excited to celebrate Career Day at their school. Gladys wants to be a firefighter when she grows up but feels discouraged by Rudy, a boy in her class, who insists she should “stick to a girl job.”

In this bilingual picture book, a young girl is upset with her mother because she picks out ugly, rubber shoes for her when they go shopping instead of pretty ballet slippers. Her goal in life becomes to destroy the shoes, but they prove indestructible.
