Crave the Heat by Marnee Blake
Smokejumpers #2

The blurb for the book pretty well sums up the story. Dak is home after being sent away over a decade ago and hopes to reconnect with his family. There is a lot that comes out about his family through the book. So, his father who is a big deal on the reservation wants him to work with Heidi as she tries to uncover who is starting fires on and around the reservation. It is being kept hushed up by some but why? Heidi has issues of her own. There is the issue of finding out who the arsonist is and the one about Dak and Heidi having a bit of romance and another to do with Dak and his family and a bit about fires. I never really felt the “click” between Dak and Heidi and also didn’t see much about firefighting mentioned in the story. This was a somewhat predictable story as I guessed who the arsonist was early on. Inevitability was iffy for me at times but know some will really like it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Lyrical Liaison for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I gave it 3.5 stars

Blue becomes violently ill and wakes up to find that her whole town was sick too and only a handful of people made it out of the sickness alive. She quickly finds out that everyone that made it has a new special ability and that there is someone hunting them down.

ALTERED was very fast paced and hand plenty of action from the first chapter to the end. Blake throws you right into the thick of things so be ready to hit the pages running. The characters all had distinct personalities and brought a little something—whether good or bad—to the story. The romance between Blue and Seth was sweet, but I really wanted more. They have a quick attraction and their relationship does develop nicely, but I felt like it was more in the background with the conflict of the book taking the forefront of the story.

There was a small thing that bothered me about ALTERED. I constantly forgot how old the characters were. You can look at the cover or feel their age after an informed grown up decision is made, but then there were times that they felt like a bunch of kids running from their enemies.

After the abrupt ending and the loose ends that it left I am convinced that there has to be another book coming. ALTERED was definitely interesting enough to me that I would be interested in reading more.

This book was so much fun to read. As soon as I started reading it, I knew I wasn't going to stop until I finished it. And I was right. It was full of non-stop action with a little romance on the side. I really liked how the characters were finding it hard to control their powers and acted accordingly. A lot of books have their characters just automatically know what to do when they get powers. I also liked that Seth was unsure of his leadership, but needed to protect his new little band of superheroes. I can't wait to read the next book cause I need to find out what happened to Kitty and the doctor. And where did Luke and Jack go? Did they make it? Get caught? I need the next book now!

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
