I am a former 2nd grade teacher and wish I would have had this book when I was in the classroom! I have always used poetry to help students with fluency, so I appreciate the research behind the Giggle Poetry Reading Lessons. The curriculum was well written and began with a strong introduction about why poetry can improve students' reading fluency. The poems in the text were fun and engaging! I appreciate how the author included a rubric at the end of the text, as well as additional information about the research. I would recommend this lesson book for 1st-3rd grade classrooms, as well as grades 4-5 for intervention.… (more)

What an interesting concept on helping kids learn to read. I enjoyed the thought behind it and the ideas of most of the poems, but some of the poems and lessons where not something that seemed usable in a learning environment. I would really like to see more creative ideas to help in teaching reading but some of these lessons will need to be modified I think, to be effective. Thanks to LibraryThing for the reviewer copy that gave me the opportunity to learn this teaching idea.

This book was rather disappointing, The poems were not particularly good and some were downright uninteresting. The process and materials provided are parent friendly, but hardly robust. Most importantly, my kids didn't enjoy reading them. The only giggling we did was out of guilt as I passed the book along to someone else. My biggest worry was that while someone might leave the text a more fluent reader, they would also leave hating poetry.

I was thrilled to receive this book! It is well organized in a lesson-by-lesson format (although you can skip around as desired). Each lesson includes objectives, procedures, and performance tips. An oral reading and performance rubric are also included for assessment purposes. There is no doubt about it being high-interest because of the use of Bruce Lansky's wonderfully fun poems. Win-win! Fluency activities never looked as good as in this book!
