I quite liked this. Just a tiny dash of insecurity, but I enjoyed the banter between the H and h. I usually am not really into intentional spinsters, but this had enough other enjoyable elements that it still qualified as my preferred trope. Clean, which I’m not keen on, but oh well. (3.5 stars)

This was a DNF for me for a number of reasons

The heroine was pretty usual run of the mill character, sweet and loving (and a bit dimwitted) but with a deformed foot that forced her to walk with a crutch.

I think she deserved better than the hero,Lord Joafre wich didnt endear himself to me in the slightest unless you count the time when the heroine was saved by him as a child from some bullies. But after that he was a pretty uninspiring hero.

Oh I get that he was supposed to be a tortured soul and such but to me only seemed to have two modes, anger or lust. That is when he wasnt ogling the heroine and thinking about her childlike innocence/eyes/behavior.

Offputting much?

Seeing as this is one of the earlier books of Susan Caroll I think you could say the hero and heroine are a cruder version of the couple from [b:The Bride Finder|39097|The Bride Finder (St. Leger, #1)|Susan Carroll|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320424251s/39097.jpg|38807] Wich is a book I really liked.

My suggestion is to read that instead.

There is only one literary Anatole as far as I'm concerned: the french cook employed by Bertie Wooster's aunt Dahlia.

This was my second time reading Brighton Road. Unfortunately, it was sillier than I remembered. There was a little too much Bertie, the boot-chewing dog.
The plusses: starchy hero, their initial meeting: heroine overhears hero proposing to a woman and then she critiques the proposal.
The minuses: the antics of Bertie the dog and other silliness, also the heroine is an author and there are tidbits of her gothic writings throughout the book.

The writing is good- I am just not into silly. 3.5/5 stars… (more)
