A book short in pages but BIG on heart. The cast of characters provides us with multiple viewpoints on what at first seems like a simple story about a hopscotch board, but evolves into a tale that reminds us to live life to its fullest, cherish the small moments, never take anyone for granted, and that we all deserve a second chance. It's a story that will touch readers of all ages...and have you reaching for that sidewalk chalk to make a board of your own.

Hopscotch is a novel about people whose lives are centered around a hospital in a small city. These people include patients as well as their families and friends and also nurses, doctors, maintenance workers, management executives, and even a local news reporter, among others.

Hospitals are place that impact the lives of almost everyone and generally the impact ranges from unpleasant to tragic. At this hospital, however, something different occurs when someone draws a chalk hopscotch board on the sidewalk outside the entrance. This simple, childhood game causes people to respond in unusual and beautiful ways. People who wouldn't normally speak to each other, reach out. Others, who are suffering with difficult injuries or diseases, find moments to smile.

Hopscotch isn't a tearjerker or a story of unrealistic miracles. Instead it is a story of people finding peace and hope in something small. Reading Cushman's novel is an uplifting experience, one I can recommend wholeheartedly.

I would like to thank Net Galley for Hopscotch by Steve Cushman. This is a wonderful easy read good feeling book about a simple game. The book takes place in a hospital and focuses on different patients and hospital staff. A hopscotch board shows up on day on the sidewalk and when people start using it things begin to change. Little different situations blend into each other until the end where everything works out just fine. A very good feel good book. If you are in need of a quick read on a flight or train ride this is the book to take along.… (more)
