Despite its age, Dahmus' work remains a valuable reference for those interested in a survey of European history during the Middle Ages in a single volume. The book actually begins with the decline of the late Roman Empire and continues into the rise of Christianity and barbarian invasions. Dahmus also takes note of the influence of Islam and Byzantium. It's a thorough work that culminates with the Hundred Years War. Political, religious, cultural, and social developments all receive due attention.… (more)

This volume was published by Doubleday in the late sixties, and B&N re-published it in 1994. It’s a little bit on the dry and boring side, but it makes up for it by covering (as the title says) seven different kings, so it’s possible to finish reading about one king before your eyes glaze over.
