Handel's operas, 1704-1726 by Winton Dean

Immensely highly regarded when it came out in the 1980s, this was one of the first book-length studies of Handel's operas since the beginning of the great Baroque Revival in the 1960s. It holds up very well indeed.

The New Grove Handel (The Composer biography series) by Winton Dean

Overall - bone dry stuff. However, I did get a sense of the man. One thing I'm taking away from these bios (Bach, Vivaldi, Handel) is that Gene Simmons is far from the first musician to be a very very clever businessman!
