A readable and fascinating discussion of Bach's compositional technique with particular focus on his ritornello procedures. Dreyfus' larger goal is to examine the dynamic that existed between Bach the composer and the philosophical and artistic currents in the first half of the eighteenth century with which he interacted but which he was not absorbed into. A book to read and reread.
