Personal account of SOE work in occupied Crete and France. Fielding is a fine writer, and his story is often gripping, but the principal virtue of this book is his descriptions of individual scenes, such as an unexpected encounter with the enemy or what goes through an operative’s head in the moments before a parachute drop. This is a book that fills in firsthand detail, it is not a broader history of the war in Crete. Recommended to be read alongside works by or about Fielding’s friend Patrick Leigh Fermor.… (more)
