Jennifer finally gets into a special Art school but some of the students think it is because she is indigenous not because she is talented. (She is the only North American Indian in the class). It all comes to a head when her piece for the art show is destroyed the day before the exhibition .....what will she do?
Looks at racism and jealousy in school.Easy reader for older students.

This book is about the relationship between a little girl and her grandfather. She asked her grandfather how to say a word in his language and he told her that his language was stolen from him when he was a child. The little girl helps her grandfather discover his language again.

This is a powerful picture book that explains how the Cree language was stolen from so many. The story begins with a conversation between a young girl and her grandfather. She is excited to get home and ask him how to say "Grandfather" in their native language, Cree. He explains to her how his language was stolen from him through the residential school that separated him from his family and tried to erase his culture. The young girl helps her grandfather to remember Cree through a book she borrows from her teacher.
This is a powerful story that can be used to teach about the challenges Native Americans have faced. This story would be an appropriate read aloud for elementary grades.

I love the art in this one, and the way it talks about residential school programs that forbade indigenous people from speaking their native languages in an age-appropriate way.
