Rolf and his family are very poor and live in Iceland. When Rolf's father is slain by servants of a rival family Rolf is unfairly outlawed. He then goes on a quest in which he defeats Vemund the Pitiless, becomes a Thrall (a servant), and wins the Viking Bow.

The story has some Old English language, but is easy to understand after a while. The story and plot are great.
