2012 AZLA Conference - A Boy, His Dog, and His GPS
Librarians often compete with technology for their readers’ attentions. Why not embrace it? HIDE AND SEEK, a novel for middle readers, has a timeless feel: a boy on his bike with his dog, having an adventure in the great outdoors of Northern Arizona. But this story has a modern technological twist: 14-year-old Chase is geocaching, using a handheld Global Positioning System device in an orienteering game to locate a hidden container. Youth librarians interested in creating an outdoor technological activity should come and learn about geocaching. Once your middle readers have read HIDE AND SEEK, you can lead them on an outdoor adventure to find nearby hidden treasure. This engaging activity requires only a handheld navigation device, internet access, and enthusiastic kids for an afternoon of fun. (ericb34)… (more)

And then there’s that blue sheet of paper Jordan keeps hidden away—its announcement makes her excited and nervous at the same time. Will she crumble under all the pressure this summer? Or learn to face her fears head-on? "The Summer Camp Mystery" by Gertrude Chandler Werner and Hodges Soileau (Illustrator) - The Boxcar Children are going to summer camp and are looking forward to a week of new friends, exciting activities, and, most of all, the annual camp Olympics.
