Monday, October 29, 7:30 PM The Ghosts of History William Heffernan, author of When Johnny Came Marching Home Laird Hunt, author of Kind one Beer reception to follow
In the spirit of Halloween, two acclaimed authors from favorite independent presses offer chilling stories from the dark heart of America’s 19th century history. Laird Hunt (author of The Exquisite) reads from his new novel Kind one (Coffee House Press) in which two Kentucky slave girls take their white mistress into captivity after the death of her abusive husband, providing “a profound meditation on the sexual and racial subconscious of America” (Danzy Senna). In three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee William Heffernan’s novel When Johnny Came Marching Home, a young, one-armed Civil War veteran investigates the death of a troubled fellow soldier in 1860s Vermont and Virginia, creating “a powerful, intriguing, and complex novel about the intricacies of friendship and the devastating effects of war” (Jonathan Santlofer). Publisher Akashic Books will provide beer for the event; join us for a unique pre-Halloween reading event.
