Hoban, Russell (father)
Short biography
British composer, now resident in Germany, of mostly chamber works that have been performed in Europe.

Mr. Hoban is the son of the writer Russell Hoban. He studied music with Jonathan Cross and other teachers at the University of Bristol in 1997–98, where he also studied German, then studied composition with Gerhard Müller-Hornbach, Isabel Mundry and Hans Zender at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main from 1998–2003.

Among his honours are Third Prize from the Viola-Stiftung in Frankfurt am Main (2001, for Subkutania I), Zweiter Preis in the Kompositionspreis from the city of Stuttgart (2001, for Hedone [Hypermnesis II]) and a Stipendenpreis at the Ferienkurse in Darmstadt (2004).

He is also active in other positions. He has written articles and provided translations for the journal Musik & Ästhetik and the series Fragmen. He has worked as an interpreter at the Ferienkurse in Darmstadt since 2000 and as a translator for the ongoing series of books New Music & Aesthetics in the 21st Century since 2001. He has translated several volumes of the writings of Peter Sloterdijk.

He has lived in Germany since 1998.
