After her sister dies, Juliana takes her place in marriage with Killian, a business arrangement pushed by both their families. Juliana was severely injured in the accident that killed her sister, and Killian blames her for his lover's death.
The story felt very gothic as Juliana always wears a veil to cover her injuries, which felt a little weird in the early parts of the book. There are a lot of twists and turns, some confusing, but in the end, it was a good and unusual dark romance.

There were some exceptional lines in this book. I was riveted by the story and watching these characters grow. First as enemies, then to friends, then to an unrequited type of love. Only, it wasn't unrequited, they both felt it but we're afraid to cross the line and hid behind dares. Which was where the story lost a little of it's charm. I expected the dares to be more pivotal, especially, because of the way this story started out. It had an Indecent Proposal type of feel to it. However, that fell short and the ending felt rushed.

I'll still read book two but I hope it fleshes out more of why they do this to each other and what secrets Maddox is hiding.

It did start to get to be a bit much as it was taking over the actual story. Once the story really picked up on where the previous book had ended, then, it really got good. The angst, the anger, the games. Totally, had me in it's clutches.

Finally understanding his parents and all the games... Really cemented this story. And that Epilogue was AMAZING. I loved Maddox and his fiery Latino Lila.… (more)

This author knows how to write romantic suspense. I am always on pins and needles. There are a lot of skillets in the fire with the book and I am anxious to see how the story plays out.
