- Jean-Etienne Liotard studied with Daniel Gardelle and Jean-Baptiste Massé before going off to Constantinople in 1738. He spent four years there painting diplomats, merchants, and slaves. He later travelled across Europe and received commissions for portraits from the British, French, and Austrian royal families, including the Empress Maria Theresa. He published his theory of painting in 1781.
