Contrary to popular opinion, kung fu is not merely a form of self-defense. While personal combat is a significant aspect of the art, kung fu encompasses such areas as Chinese medicine, alchemy, weaonry, scholarship and practical philosophy. Traditionally, kung fu men and women were expected to study the wisdom and skills of a wide variety of professions in these areas and only those students who were able to succeed in these fields earned the title of master.
But the true meaning of kung fu is the state of mind so necessary to excel in these fields as well as in all human endeavors: it is the ability to transcend worldly problems and achieve life in a state of peaceful harmony. As the author surmises; 'kung fu is a spirit, an idea, a folk culture, a way of living.'
The Wisdom of Kung Fu serves as a history, an entertainment and, most importantly, an inspiration.
