[excerpt from author's Linked In page]
I write fiction and nonfiction books for children. My debut picture book, Not Little (Neal Porter Books / Holiday House, 2021) was named a 2022 ALA Notable Children's Book; the follow-up Not Perfect will publish in 2024. I'm the author of the forthcoming Rosie Woods chapter book series (Capstone, 2024), a set of fairy tale-inspired school stories, including Little Red Writing Hood, Jack and the Bean Shock, Rosielocks and the Three Bears, and The Three Billy Goats Graph. I wrote the National Geographic Kids Little Kids First Big Book of Baby Animals, as well as several titles in the NGK Readers series.

I have worked as a freelance editor since 2012. I provide developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and proofreading to major publishers, individual authors, and corporate clients. In books, I work with both fiction and nonfiction; as a former teacher and literacy teacher, and as a traditionally published children's author, my knowledge of children's and YA literature is particularly strong, but I am also happy working on adult titles. For small businesses, corporations, and nonprofit organizations, I help to refine and perfect website and marketing copy, newsletters, corporate bios, and press releases.

Synergy: Baby Animals

Baby animals are the offspring of living creatures. While some animal offspring are independent at birth, others are cared for by a parent, parents, or family. Animal offspring may look like their parents, but they are not identical.

Read three recently published book for children, then learn more at the website:

LITTLE KIDS FIRST BIG BOOK OF BABY ANIMALS by Maya Myers features a wide range of mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, octopus, and insect babies. Five chapters explore grassland, water, mountain/desert, forest, and polar babies through colorful photographs and factual information. The book concludes with a map, parent tips, a glossary, and more. ARC courtesy of National Geographic Kids.

FIND OUT ABOUT ANIMAL BABIES by Martin Jenkins explores a wide range of animal babies and how they grow. The author provides a general statement about animal babies, then examines one animal family in more detail. ARC courtesy of Candlewick Press.

DO BABY ELEPHANTS SUCH THEIR TRUNKS? by Ben Lerwill uses engaging questions to jump-start explorations of animal babies. Inquiries are addressed through examining a specific animal baby. ARC courtesy of Nosy Crow, an imprint of Candlewick Press.

Nat Geo WILD provides fascinating videos about baby animals. ANIMAL MOMS contains four videos about moms and their babies. BARNYARD BABIES is a playlist containing nearly a dozen short videos about farm babies.

National Geographic Readers are a great choice for beginning readers, whether or not they have reached fluency. Although the vocabulary and sentence structure tends to be challenging, kids have no problem looking at the pictures and I've seen many grab a friend who is a stronger reader to help them figure out the text.

This latest book introduces the readers to llamas. Plentiful photographs, quizzes, and jokes fill the pages as readers learn about where llamas live, what they eat, and how they interact with humans. The book is divided into two-four page chapters and the photographs blend smoothly with the text.

Of course, like most publishers, the levels are completely out of wack. They call this a level 1, "Starting to read" and while most of the basic sentence structures are fairly simple, "Llamas live in family groups called herds." all the little extras, jokes, captions, etc. add up to a pretty challenging read. This is why I use my own leveling system - black, red, green, and blue, with a chart showing parents and caregivers what levels each includes. This one came out to a green, so for more intermediate beginners.

Verdict: Although I find the leveling exasperating, National Geographic Readers are a must-have for your easy reader section and this is a popular topic and nicely put together.
