The incredible adventures of Rowland Hern by Nicholas. Olde
Hardly a forgotten classic, but not terrible either. The blurb boasts "15 impossible 'gems' that rival John Dickson Carr or Robert Adey". There is one impossible crime among the 15 stories (which could be classified as locked-room by stretching the definition). The writing is less John Dickson Carr than Chesterton with a similar obsession with strange, inexplicable situations that finally do make sense. Except they don't always, and Olde is no match to Chesterton as a writer. He's somewhere in between Chesterton and Keeler.… (more)
