Very interesting reading. Follows life of Winifred Holtby in great detail. It makes a nice contrast to Testament of Friendship, Vera Brittian's account of their two lives.
Very well written and constructed to present the most interesting aspects of her life. Fascinating about her relationship with her mother, with Vera's husband, and her many friends and causes. The new angle on Winifred is how successful she was in her work, and how entertaining she was to befriend. The author also analyses her situation in life as a spinster in the most positive and refreshing terms. The context of her writing is clearly explained, probably the most valuable part of the book to me.… (more)
