Rob Shone's Harriet Tubman: The Life of an African American Abolitionist amazed me with its fun and easy to read format and wonderful captions. I like how the author portrayed Harriet Tubman as a heroic, self-sacrificing, brave and selfless figure helping anyone in trouble, whether it was other slaves, wounded Civil War soldiers or the homeless poor. During the American Civil War, she served as a soldier, a spy and a nurse. "From 1850-1860, Harriet Tubman led about 13 daring escape missions. She freed about 70 slaves, including her parents, and helped many more. The routes she used took the runaways north from Maryland on the Underground Railroad to Pennsylvania. Later, Harriet took them over the border into Canada." I recommend this book to teachers who want their class to infer the pictures in this book.… (more)
