About the Author
Mary Stockwell received her Ph.D. in American history from the University of Toledo. She was professor of history and department chair at Lourdes University and an Earhart Foundation Fellow at the William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan. She is the author of a number of history books, show more including The Ohio Adventure and Massachusetts, Our Home, winner of the 2005 Golden Lamp Award from the Association of Educational Publishers for Best Book. show less

Besides that Stockwell does a fine job of intertwining her military life of Wayne with the political situation of the time, as real party politics became a factor in American governance and as the course of the French Revolution led the American leadership to second-guess what their values really were. For someone interested in the early days of the American Republic I really can't recommend this book enough.… (more)
