Born in Germany, Tennenbaum came to America at 10 with her mother and stepfather, conductor William Steinberg. She was graduated as a fine arts major from Barnard, where she met her husband, Lloyd, a student at the Jewish Theological Seminary. ("He was in love with my best friend—who went to Europe.") He is a psychotherapist and ex-rabbi. They live in a five-bedroom home in East Hampton, L.I., where Silvia likes to putter around in blue jeans, a smock top and running shoes.
