Character description

Francis James Child (1825-1896): American scholar. A graduate of Harvard, he was competent in every subject he studied, but gave his attention to language and balladry. His work on Chaucer is considered foundational, but he is best remembered for his ten volume opus The English and Scottish Popular Ballads.
