- About My Library
- I hope to make this site a library-like companion to the development of a learning community around the sociology of compassion as well as a complement to my website at www.compassnt.com . I encourage anyone with possible books to nominate to email me and I will do my best to post your suggestions and/or review comments as soon as I possibly can.
- About Me
- Hello! I am Mark Durieux (Ph.D.), clinical sociologist and symbolic interactionist. I teach sociology at Mt. Royal College and the University of Calgary (both in Calgary, Alberta, Canada) as well as Athabasca University (Canada's "Open" web-based university). My primary substantive interest as a sociologist is in what I and others have begun to call the "sociology of compassion." More specifically, my sociological interests and collaborations center on coming to grips with the gap between ideal ("ought") and real ("is") forms of compassion in the world today. This is the world, for example, where the equivalent of 300 jumbo jets fall out of the sky every day, crashing, burning, no survivors, and ½ of the victims – not "casualties" – are children! That’s 40 million (and rising) people a year dying from hunger-related (largely preventable!!) diseases!* Isn’t it time for a sociology of compassion? I would certainly welcome contact with anyone else who might be interested in this increasingly essential topic.
