About meI'm a musician, UNIX/web geek and compulsive cataloguer living in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

About my libraryMy rating system is erratic at best and highly subjective. A rating generally reflects my enjoyment of a book, rather than a critical assessment of it.

I tend not to read much fiction, and usually pass along novels once I've read them.

Apparantly the signing went well. They didn't have too many copies with them, so Spottswood is supposed to mail me one. Also, a new Fisk CD is now out on Archeophone (haven't gotten mine yet.) It's a 100+ page book by Doug Seroff with 2 CD's, and includes all the early Fisk cylinder recordings. Can't wait! Roger
Dear Rob:

Forgot to mention Stephen Wade (banjoist for Spongebob & Squarepants) and Dick Spottswood (the famed) are doing a signing of their new book on mountain banjo on Saturday. Wade Mainer (age 103) will be there too. I'll let you know when I get a copy. Roger
Dear Rob:

I'm trying to figure out the Fisk Jubilee editions. What does your picture show -- a group with or without a pump organ? What thousandth sold? I presume yours is a US edition -- or did you just use Amazon? All mine seem to be British.

I just helped with a Fisk CD on Archeophone. Haven't gotten it yet, but it should have a 100+ page booklet by Doug Seroff with it. Also, I just finished a little presentation on Pioneer Gospel songs 1894 - 1914. If you want it I'll send you a copy, but need your address again. Roger

Dear Rob: I'm afraid the Blind Willie Johnson book is pretty much a waste of money. I hate to discourage an author, but this is pretty much an expensive fanzine sort of thing. The Columbia/Legacy CD 2CK 52835, The Complete Blind Willie Johnson, notes by Sam Charters are better, and you get the music too. David Evans notes on Yazoo CD 1078 are good too. Lyrics are to be found in Bob MacLeod book Yazoo 21-83; Blakey's book is mainly lyrics with filler. It's pretty expensive, too, though I didn't note the exact price. However, since I've got almost all the 78s, LP reissues, and mainstream CDs, I suppose it's worth it to me. The guitar explication is not anything to be raving about either, although from what I remember this guy is basically a guitar player who pursued his mania, so maybe it would be of more interest to those who don't happen to specialize in the field, and are more or less just starting out. Unfortunately, if you're a guitarist, the music is neither written out in tab or regular notation. Sorry to have to be so discouraging, but this isn't a must have or must read book. Roger PS: since you have to order this online, and it seems to be published on order, I doubt you'll find it even used unless you really look, so get it if you need to complete something, or else try to read it through interlibrary loan.
Hey, thanks again for the tip on the Ralph Stanley book. I just noticed your Willy Wall Trio comment on Waxidermy and thought I recognized the name. Weird coincidence.
Thanks, Rob. I'm joining "Hymnbooks" now!
Rob, I joined your group because I have so many hymnbooks of all kinds and thought others might be interested in exchanging. Many of mine were gathered by my mother, so are pretty old. Anyone is welcome to look.
rob - i've added you to my watchlist. i don't know what that means, but i guess i'll find out.

i have more books than you.
Hey. Scott Barretta is the number 3 on your list (ruckusjuice) and is pretty high up on mine...
