"Beautifully written with extraordinary insight into the frailties of humanity."-- Australian Originally written in Yiddish and first published in English in 1946, this was one of the earliest works of fiction to address the consequences of Hitler's Final Solution. Herz Bergner's novel follows a group of Jewish refugees fleeing Europe aboard a dilapidated freighter. As the ship creeps toward disaster, tensions surface on board. The author creates unflinching psychological portraits of the reactions of the passengers to the profound uncertainty of their fate. An arresting novel of compassion and understanding, that resonates tragically with the recent Syrian refugee crisis.… (more)

Reissue of the 1948 ALS award-winning novel about a boatload of Jewish refugees escaping the Holocaust, but not really wanted by anyone. Full review at whisperinggums: http://whisperinggums.wordpress.com/2010/06/19/herz-bergner-between-sky-and-sea/ ( )

It’s a simple story really. A rickety old Greek freighter is carrying a group of Jewish refugees from the Nazi invasion of Poland, but it’s denied entry at a succession of ports. Supplies are running out, and internal tension wracks the ship. These people are traumatized after suffering enormous losses and they fear that no one will take them in.

Reissed by Text Publishing in 2009 because this issue is again topical, Between Sky and Sea won the Australian Society of Literature’s gold medal for book of the year in 1948. It’s an important book which deserves to be widely read.

Book description
Fleeing the Nazi invasion of Poland, a group of Jewish refugees are thrown together - human cargo on a dilapidated Greek freighter, bound for Australia and the promise of a new life.

But the ship wallows listlessly between sky and sea, unwelcome at any port. And its passengers find their lives laid bare. Tensions rise as they try to cope with their profound sense of loss and the uncertainty of their fate - guilt, desperatioin and tenderness intertwine as the novel moves towards its shocking climax.

Herz Bergner's Between Sea and Sky is a moving portrayal of people pushed to the limit - a poignant and timeless depictioin of the human condition.
